Harvey Milk was born in Woodmere, New York on May 22, 1930. He lead a very normal childhood, but at a young age he knew he was gay. None of his family, friends, or classmates knew for a very long time. Harvey would have secret gay relationships.
During this time period gay people could get fired from their jobs, arrested, and even beaten to death. Harvey moved back and forth to different places. Finally he moved to the Castro Village in San Francisco. This was new the place for all the gays. Harvey and his boyfriend at the time, Scott Smith, got an apartment together and opened up their own business, Castro Camera. Harvey Milk got the gays to come out of the closet and fight for their rights, even though he lost his campaign for City Supervisors three times he finally won and continued to fight for their rights.
